NSWOCC Expands CNA-Accredited Educational Offerings with New Skin Health Course for PSWs, Healthcare Assistants, and Caregivers

[Ottawa, Wednesday, August 21, 2024] – Nurses Specialized in Wound, Ostomy and Continence Canada (NSWOCC®) is proud to announce that its Personal Support Worker, Healthcare Assistant & Caregiver Skin Health Course has received accreditation from the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA). This accreditation reflects NSWOCC’s ongoing commitment to advancing the quality of care provided by frontline healthcare professionals and further cements the organization’s leadership in wound, ostomy, and continence education in Canada.

The CNA Accreditation Program is recognized for its rigorous standards in continuing professional development for nurses and allied healthcare professionals across Canada. By achieving this accreditation, the NSWOCC® Wound, Ostomy and Continence Institute (WOC Institute) demonstrates its dedication to providing high-quality educational programs that meet national standards of excellence.

This comprehensive course is meticulously designed to equip Personal Support Workers (PSWs), Healthcare Assistants, and Caregivers with the necessary knowledge to address skin health challenges adeptly. Skin health is paramount in patient care, particularly for individuals dealing with Moisture-Associated Skin Damage (MASD), skin tears, and pressure injuries. Recognizing the pivotal role that PSWs, Healthcare Assistants, and Caregivers play in preventing skin breakdown and wounds, this course is tailored to empower these frontline professionals with targeted education in these key areas.

Delivered entirely online, the Personal Support Worker, Healthcare Assistant & Caregiver Skin Health Course comprises four modules, allowing participants the flexibility to commence at their convenience and progress at their own pace over approximately six weeks. The course covers essential topics including maintaining skin health, understanding and managing MASD, preventing and treating pressure injuries, and addressing skin tears. Participants will also benefit from virtual mentorship provided by a team of CNA-certified Nurses Specialized in Wound, Ostomy, and Continence (NSWOC®s).

“We are honoured to receive CNA accreditation for our Personal Support Worker, Healthcare Assistant & Caregiver Skin Health Course,” said Dr. Kimberly LeBlanc, Academic Chair at NSWOCC. “This recognition underscores our commitment to enhancing the quality of care delivered by PSWs, Healthcare Assistants, and Caregivers across Canada. Through this course, we aim to empower these professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to make a significant impact on patient outcomes in their daily practice.”

As NSWOCC continues to lead in nursing education, this newly accredited course serves as a benchmark for quality and professionalism in the field of skin health. Healthcare professionals can rely on the NSWOCC® WOC Institute to provide state-of-the-art educational programs that foster excellence in wound, ostomy, and continence care.
