Continence Management Course

Introduction to Continence Management is an 8-week course, self-paced and online, open to all health care professionals. Learners will be directed through a series of highly interactive modules designed to provide foundational knowledge in the area of continence management. Student’s will be supported by CNA-certified NSWOCs via the online course forum and during weekly virtual office hours.

Course Outcomes

Course Content

The course consists of six units and a final quiz.

Course Modules
  • Unit 1: Anatomy and physiology

    • A review of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and integumentary systems 

  • ​Unit 2: Comprehensive Patient Interview and Physical Assessment

    • An examination of the continence-focused patient interview and physical assessment linking potential findings to their impact on urinary and fecal continence.

    • An overview of clinical evaluations and diagnostic tests for fecal and urinary incontinence.

  • ​Unit 3: Acute Urinary Incontinence

    • An examination of the causes, risk factors, and management of acute urinary incontinence

    • Discussion of appropriate selection and application of containment and barrier products for management of incontinence.

  • Unit 4: Chronic Urinary Incontinence

    • An in depth look at Stress Urinary Incontinence, Urge Urinary Incontinence, and Functional urinary incontinence, including causes, differentiating characteristics, risk factors, and management strategies for each.

  • Unit 5: Overflow Incontinence

    • A comprehensive review of factors causing urinary retention and overflow incontinence and their potential complications 

    • Examination of intermittent and indwelling urinary catheterization, including:

      • Best practices for catheter insertion and management

      • Catheter selection, including composition, sizing, tips, balloons, and more

  • Unit 6: Fecal Incontinence

    • An examination of gastrointestinal motility disorders and their impact on fecal continence

    • Management of motility disorders and fecal incontinence

 

The final quiz consists of 30 questions related to the course content.
Students must achieve a 70% on the final quiz to receive their certificate of completion.
