Learning Objectives


By the end of this self-paced online course, participants will be able to:


  • Identify the legal and professional scope of practice considerations related to wound debridement, including consent, documentation, liability risks, and regulatory or institutional policies governing each type of debridement. 

  • Define wound debridement and explain its role in the wound healing process. 

  • Compare and contrast the mechanisms of action, indications, contraindications, benefits, limitations, and adverse effects of various types of debridement, including how to safely initiate or perform each of the following: Autolytic, Enzymatic, Mechanical, Sharp/surgical, Biological (maggot therapy).

  • Outline and evaluate wound and patient-specific factors that influence the selection of debridement techniques, including comorbidities and differentiation of wound tissue types. 

  • Identify and integrate  pain management, infection control, and patient-centred care principles during debridement. 

  • Apply evidence-based guidelines and standards of practice in the selection, implementation, and documentation of debridement strategies.
