Ostomy Management Course
Are you a healthcare professional with an interest in learning more about ostomy management?​
The CNA-accredited Ostomy Management Course is a trailblazing, interactive online course designed for healthcare professionals who have an interest in improving care for individuals living with urinary and/or fecal ostomy.
​
The course provides an opportunity for nurses and healthcare professionals to deepen their understanding and clinical judgment in the assessment and management of urinary and fecal ostomies. Emphasis is placed on comprehensive patient and stoma assessment, understanding surgical interventions and medical diagnoses, and identifying pouching and peristomal skin complications to implement appropriate, evidence-based, patient-centered interventions to manage living with an ostomy.

Upon completion, learners will be equipped with the foundational knowledge required to confidently address ostomy management challenges in clinical practice and collaborate with the interprofessional health care team.
The Ostomy Managemenet Course is accredited by the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) for 60 educational hours.
The CNA Accreditation Program upholds standards of quality for continuing professional development for nurses in Canada. This accreditation through CNA demonstrates that the program has been subject to a rigorous quality assessment and has achieved nationwide recognition.

Course Structure
The program is a self-paced, interactive online course based on current evidence-based practice. It is designed to be completed in 8 weeks. Students can expect to spend 4-5 hours per week completing course content.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this self-paced online course, participants will be able to:

Explain the anatomy and physiology of the gastrointestinal and genitourinary systems as they relate to the formation and function of an ostomy.

Differentiate between types of ostomies, including characteristics of effluent and key management strategies.

Describe the comprehensive assessment of patients living with ostomies, including stoma and peristomal skin evaluation.

Analyze findings from the comprehensive assessment to select appropriate ostomy products and develop an individualized, evidence-informed care plan.
-
Provide evidence-informed education to support persons living with a stoma in managing their care, adapting to lifestyle changes, and promoting long-term self-efficacy and quality of life.

Identify common ostomy-related complications, and collaborate with the interprofessional team, including NSWOCs and SWANs as needed.
